Background
The founders of New York were Samuel de Champlain in 1608, and a year later Henry Hudson (Englishman). The founder of Pennsylvania was England claimed by John Cabot in 1497, but many European countries maid claims on the land. The founder of Delaware was Henry Hudson in 1609. The founders of New Jersey were Lord Berkeley and Sir George Carteret in 1664. The Middle Colonies were mainly founded for religious persecution and religious freedom.
Social
In the Middle Colonies, slaves and Indentured Servants were owned and slaves had the ability to buy their freedom. English Puritans, English Quakers, Lutherans, protestants, Mennonites, Amish, Moravians (from Germany), Presbyterians (from Scotland and Ireland), Huguenots, and Jews (from Europe).
Religion
Most of the Middle Colonies allowed people to practice whatever religion they chose. Religious freedom and religious persecution were the main reasons for these colonies. There were Puritans of New England and Catholic people from Maryland.
Government
In some of the Middle Colonies, there is a King that rules the colony and that has most if not all control and power with limited and little self government by the people of the colony. The other colonies offered political freedom and self government with representatives, assemblies, laws, and a governor that oversaw the legislature.
Geography
These colonies were mostly on the coast (the colonies were swampy near the water) and had fertile soil to grow crops. There were lots of rolling hills and trees in the middle area. In the Northern area, there were mountains, forest grounds, and rocky soil. Winters were bitterly cold and summers were hot and humid.
Economy
Most of the people in the Middle Colonies were farmers and grew crops such as corn, wheat, flax, vegetables, and a little bit of tobacco. They mined for iron, they were merchants, and tradesmen (They traded lumber, slaves, iron, etc.). they shipped raw materials and crops to England and England sent manufactured goods back to the colonies.
